Preparing for Emergencies with Your Pet

Our hearts are broken for everyone impacted by the LA wildfires. We are thinking of all the people and animals who lost their homes, and hoping for all pets to be reunited with their families.

These kinds of tragedies remind us that emergencies can strike at any time, whether it’s a major blizzard in Massachusetts or wildfires in California. As pet owners, it's our responsibility to ensure our furry companions are just as prepared as we are.

Here’s how you can get ready:

1. Create a Pet Emergency Kit

Your kit should include:

  • Food and water for at least 5 days

  • Medications and medical records

  • Sturdy leashes, harnesses, or carriers

  • A photo of you with your pet (to prove ownership), as well as vaccination records

  • Waste bags and litter supplies

  • Comfort items like snacks, toys and blankets

  • Copies of legal documents like pet care agreements or custody papers

2. Plan for Evacuation

Know where you’ll go if you need to leave your home. Research pet-friendly shelters or hotels in your area. For wildfires or hurricanes, having a backup location in a neighboring state may be necessary.

3. Microchip and ID Tags

Ensure your pet’s microchip information is up to date, and always keep them collared with a clear ID tag. These small details make a big difference in reuniting pets with their families after disasters.

4. Practice Shelter-In-Place

Emergencies like severe storms or extreme heat may require you to stay home. Identify a safe area in your house where pets can stay comfortable, and keep your emergency kit nearby.

5. Keep Legal Protections in Place

In the case of shared custody arrangements, it’s critical to have agreements in writing. If an emergency separates you, legal documents can clarify care responsibilities.

6. Stay Informed

Sign up for emergency alerts in your state. In Massachusetts, you can use the Massachusetts Alerts app; in California, check out the Cal Alerts website. Being informed helps you act quickly for both yourself and your pets.

When it comes to emergencies, preparation is the greatest act of love you can offer your pet.

At Boston Dog Lawyers, we’re here to support pet owners by protecting their rights and offering practical advice.
